Makedonka Mitreva
Makedonka Mitreva, PhD, is a Professor of Medicine and of Genetics at Washington University School of Medicine. She has a keen interest in genomics-based advances in infectious diseases and serves as an Assistant Director of the McDonnell Genome Institute and a Director of the Center for Clinical Genomics of Microbial Systems. Using next-generation ‘omics data and advanced systems biology approaches Dr. Mitreva’s research contributes to improved detection, prevention and/or control of helminth infections. Her studies provide deeper understanding of molecular mechanisms involved in parasite invasion, metabolism and host dependent development, host-parasite-microbiome interactions, genome evolution and resistance. As discoveries emerge, she branches off into further research threads that require novel interdisciplinary approaches, the goal being to improve global health.
